Commemorate the RCMP’s 150 years of service: Mark the occasion with this UHR compilation of coins from the past.
In 2023, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is commemorating 150 years of history and service, and The Royal Canadian Mint is marking the occasion with this curated collection of RCMP coin designs, with some dating back to 1973.
Designed for passionate collectors and struck in Ultra High Relief (UHR), this compilation mixes numismatic and commemorative tributes from The Royal Canadian Mints past, and highlights RCMP anniversaries that were previously commemorated on Royal Canadian Mint coins, including the 25-cent piece from the force’s centennial year (1973). Each of these reproduced designs is a variation of the iconic RCMP horse and rider image—the venerable “Mountie” image that is recognized worldwide.
Six designs on one coin—it’s an RCMP retrospective in Ultra High Relief.

ICONIC IMAGERY
The Mountie on horseback is one of the most iconic images of Canada, and each of the six designs on your coin’s reverse is a variation on that classic image.
ANNIVERSARIES PAST AND PRESENT
Many of the designs re-visited on this 2023 coin are associated with previous RCMP anniversaries, such as the 25-cent and proof dollar designs from the force’s centennial year (1973).
DID YOU KNOW?
May 23, 1873 is the official birthdate of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)—that’s the day Parliament passed a bill allowing for the creation of a new police force, the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), which became the RCMP in 1920.
Your coin’s reverse re-creates two designs from the RCMP’s centennial year in 1973: a 25-cent coin and a commemorative silver dollar; both were designed by late RCMP Staff Sergeant Paul Cederberg. The image of a mounted officer also appears on the 1998 proof dollar designed by Adeline Halvorson in honour of the 125ᵗʰ anniversary of the RCMP (and the founding of the NWMP).
A different centennial inspired the 2020 Moments to Hold: Celebrating 100 Years of the RCMP as Canada’s National Police Force coin designed by Ago Aarand. In 1920, the Dominion Police and the Royal North-West Mounted Police (the “royal” title was conferred upon the NWMP in 1904) were combined to form one national police service, which was renamed the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Today, the RCMP’s mandate also includes federal, provincial and municipal policing responsibilities.
The 2010 1/25 oz. pure gold coin, designed by artist Janet Griffin-Scot, was a tribute rather than a commemoration. The issue of the 2013 O Canada: Royal Canadian Mounted Police coin, also designed by Janet Griffin-Scott, coincided with the RCMP’s 140ᵗʰ anniversary.
Struck in Ultra High Relief, the reverse design is a compilation of Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)-themed “horse and rider” designs from previous coins (clockwise from top left): the 1973 commemorative silver dollar; 2013’s $10 O Canada: Royal Canadian Mounted Police; 1998’s 125ᵗʰ Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police silver proof dollar; 2020’s $5 Moments to Hold: Celebrating 100 Years of the RCMP as Canada’s National Police Force (when legislation came into effect in 1920 that changed the Royal North-West Mounted Police (RNWMP) name to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police); 2010’s pure gold 50-cent (1/25 oz.) RCMP coin; and at the centre, the 1973 100ᵗʰ Anniversary of the RCMP 25-cent circulation coin. Backed by a textured field, the designs are flanked by maple leaves and accompanied by the word “CANADA”, a face value of “50 DOLLARS”, and the words “150 YEARS / ANS” to mark the RCMP’s 150ᵗʰ anniversary in 2023. The obverse features a maple leaf pattern and the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.
"As Canada’s national police service, the RCMP’s footprint spans every province and territory and beyond our borders through international policing and peacekeeping. The RCMP recognizes that its 150-year story comes with chapters that reflect many accomplishments to be proud of as well as chapters the organization needs to acknowledge, atone and actively learn from. The RCMP is firmly on the path to becoming a more modern, diverse, inclusive and trusted RCMP that serves with honour and pride across Canada from coast-to-coast-to-coast and internationally." - ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE
"It’s always exciting to work on an R&D project, but I was especially honoured to contribute to the RCMP’s 150ᵗʰ anniversary. This coin is like a time capsule of the Mint celebrating the RCMP, and having the opportunity to re-create designs that I collected as a youth was an amazing experience. It is a testament to our R&D group that we could create a high relief, multilevel coin with such detail and finish." - MATTHEW BOWEN
