The Sovereign gold coin is one of the worlds oldest coins still being struck, with the reverse design dating back to 1817. Benedetto Pistrucci's engraving of St George and the dragon is considered one of the best coin designs of all time. The 2016 Sovereign is the first to bear the new effigy of the Queen by Royal Mint engraver, Jody Clark. The Sovereign is made of what has been referred to as crown gold (22 karat), which made the coin more durable as well as harder to shave or file gold off of them!
