Although the exact origin of the nationalistic symbol is unknown, it is believed that the word "Gallus," Latin for rooster, was a homonym for the original inhabitants of France, the Gauls. The term was adopted and applied to the nations people as a symbol of their sovereignty and patriotism. The symbol was so deeply ingrained within the people, that the third French republic used it as the symbol of their gold sovereigns from 1899 until 1914. This period was a pivotal one, which brought stability to France, following the fall of their second empire. The rooster is a prevalent theme in French patriotism to this day, as it adorns the crest of both the national rugby and the World Cup champion soccer team. "Le coq Gaulois" also features prominently throughout the nation on monuments, memorials, and gates. This rich history is reflected on this stunning 10 French franc sovereign.

Contained on the reverse side is a French rooster in mid strut, designed by legendary French sculptor and medallist, Jules Clement Chaplain. The legend reads, "Liberte. Egalite. Fraternite." Or Liberty, equality, brotherhood in reference to the sovereignty instilled by the Third Republic. The obverse depicts the French rendition of Lady Liberty and the symbol of the French Republic, Marianne, who embodies Liberty and reason. Marianneʼs right-facing effigy is accompanied by a legend that reads, "Republic Française" or The French Republic. The French rooster holds the distinction as being one of the most recognizable numismatic coins in the world. Sovereigns with such rich historical origins accrue value over the years, making them a sound addition to any portfolio.
