The Morgan Silver Dollar, which inspired this copper round, was designed by George T. Morgan in 1878, and the coins were minted until 1904, then again in 1921. His design was very different from previous effigies of Lady Liberty as he incorporated a more American look, unlike the traditional Greek styling usually depicted. His model for the profile was Anna Willess Williams, a teacher and philosophical writer.

The design itself shows Lady Liberty in profile, with her hair laid out in loose curls. She is wearing a headband that has her name written on it, a laurel wreath, as well as a pileus, commonly worn in Ancient Greece. The 13 stars, symbolizing the 13 colonies, encircle around her, along with the phrase "E PLURIBUS UNUM," meaning "out of many, one."
