Product details

Storytelling has long been a rich tradition for many cultures, none more so than the Aboriginal peoples.

It has been said that from the first snowfall to the first clap of thunder, elders impart traditions, history and life lessons to the younger generation through narratives filled with allegories, vivid images and creative twists.

For cultures since the beginning of time, tales like these and the message they convey, have helped people form deep connections to who they are and the world around them.

It has formed civilizations and even recorded history.

Often these stories involve characters with physical and personality traits of humans, animals, plants and even the elements.

For the Anisinaabe, an important cultural character is Nanaboozhoo, a shape-shifting spirit who teaches them right from wrong through his adventures while at the same time teaching them to live in harmony with nature and its importance.

The obverse features the Susanna Blunt effigy of Queen Elizabeth II and the words "Elizabeth II D.G. Regina"

The reverse features a design by Canadian artist Cyril Assiniboine, who is Ojibwa.

The design portrays Nanaboozhoo climbing the highest cliff to get to the Thunderbird's nest so he can pluck a feather from the baby birds (depicted in the upper right side).

But a fully grown Thunderbird has returned to the nest and is angered by what has happened.

With thunder rolling from its beak and lightning flashing from its eyes, Nanaboozhoo is fleeing while holding the feather adorned arrow in his right hand.

The artist has managed to preserve the style of Aboriginal people in an intricately detailed coin that captures the defining moment of the story.

Engraved above are the words "2014 Canada 20 Dollars"

This limited release coin has a worldwide mintage of only 8,500 and is sure to sell out quickly.

It makes a perfect addition to any Aboriginal themed or silver collection.
