This rarely seen coin celebrates the 1988 XV Olympic Winter Games, held in Calgary.
The obverse displays an image of the Olympic torch as held during the torch relay. The stylized flames coming off the torch are meant to symbolize the Rocky Mountains, which can be seen from Calgary and which provided the venues for the skiing events. The torch itself was modeled on the Calgary Tower and was carried over 18000 kilometers over the three months of the torch relay.
