Since its creation in 1878 by legendary engraver George T. Morgan, the Morgan silver dollar enjoys a sustained reputation as one of the world's most easily recognizable bullion coins. Morgan T. Stanley revolutionized his design using an American model rather than the typical Greek-inspired rendition of Lady Liberty. The newly imagined Lady Liberty featured a real American woman as the model, as she donned a Phrygian cap.

In 2018, the Smithsonian released a new medal themed after the iconic coin to commemorate the 140th anniversary.
